How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture aims to stimulate the body’s own internal regulating or ‘self-healing’ mechanisms. The ancient Chinese believed that health was dependent on the smooth flow of energy within the body. With disruption in this flow, the normal functioning of the body would become impaired and symptoms of illness could arise. This smooth flow of energy was thought to be influenced by a number of factors including diet, emotional stress, physical trauma, as well as one’s own constitution. By inserting needles into specific points on the body, acupuncture was thought to promote, restore and maintain the natural flow of energy and as a result, the self-healing mechanisms of the body were stimulated and balance within the body was restored.

With advances in modern research, we now have a clearer understanding of how acupuncture works

. When the needles stimulate specific points, they activate sensory nerves that send signals to the spinal cord and brain. This helps the body release natural chemicals that ease pain, lift mood, and calm the nervous system. Acupuncture has also been shown to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and support the HPA axis — the system that helps regulate stress, sleep, and hormones.

WHat DoES ACUPUNCture feel like?

Most people feel a sensation of warmth, tingling, dull pressure, numbness, or gentle radiating sensation around the needle site. This is known as the needling sensation and is a desired effect. Unlike standard hypodermic needles, acupuncture needles are ultra fine and flexible to ensure minimal discomfort. Many people find acupuncture quite relaxing, once the needles are in place. After treatment you may occasionally feel drowsy. This is thought to be the body's natural response to treatment and its effect is only short lived.

CAN Acupuncture be used alongside conventional medical treatment?

Yes. Acupuncture works well alongside conventional medicine and is often used to complement existing treatments or medications. Make sure to inform your practitioner of any medications or supplements you may be taking as this is important information he or she will need to know.

your FIRST VISIT - What to expect

The Consultation

During your first visit, your practitioner will take a detailed assessment of your current symptoms, medical history, and overall health. In addition to discussing your main concern, you may be asked about your emotions, lifestyle, diet, and sleep patterns. As part of a traditional Chinese medicine evaluation, your tongue may be examined, and pulses on both wrists may be taken.

What to Expect during Treatment

During treatment, fine, sterile single-use needles are gently inserted into carefully selected acupuncture points on your body. The number and placement of needles will depend on your condition and the acupuncture style used. Most patients find the treatment relaxing and comfortable.
